About these Images

I created the images on this site using various AI image generators. I wrote the prompts and chose the models. Here are the technical details.

Are these images “art”? Am I an “artist”? If we accept the Oxford English Dictionary definitions, it looks like the images are art, but I’m not an artist. The AI model creators are the artists; I’m merely a patron.

According to the OED:

“Art” means:

The expression or application of creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting, drawing, or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power. Also: such works themselves considered collectively.

Oxford English Dictionary, s.v. “art (n.1), sense I.8.a,” December 2024, https://doi.org/10.1093/OED/1198420385. (emphasis added)

“Artist” means:

A person skilled in any of the fine arts; (now more generally) a person who practises any creative art in which accomplished execution is informed by imagination.

Oxford English Dictionary, s.v. “artist (n.), sense III.6.a,” December 2024, https://doi.org/10.1093/OED/1893584796. (emphasis added)

“Accomplished” means:

Of a person: highly trained, educated, or skilled; possessing many accomplishments.

Oxford English Dictionary, s.v. “accomplished (adj.), sense 1.a.i,” September 2024, https://doi.org/10.1093/OED/8723917622.

Are the models art?  The model creators used their “creative skill[s] and imagination” in the models’ creation. This creativity is “expressed…in a visual form”. Thus, the images are art.

Who is the artist?  An artist needs skill. The model creators are clearly skilled; the images prove it! I have no skill in creating visual art. I am like a poor man’s Medici: I specify what I want, write the check, and let the artists produce it.

Whatever they are, I love these images. I hope you enjoy them too.
